This RTS IEEE 1588 software is a full Ordinary Clock implementation of Version 1 and Version 2 of the Standard and allows to highly-accurately synchronize distributed real-time clocks over standard Ethernet.
 
It is now possible to achieve a maximum jitter of around 3 microseconds on a regular Windows PC with the widely available Intel 82574Land 82579LM network adapter. With other protocols like NTP this accuracy is impossible.
 
The IEEE 1588 clock in the Intel chip can be accessed through an API and additionally the Windows System time can be synchronized automatically to the Intel Chip.
 
The RTS IEEE 1588 Ordinary Clock software stack incorporates the full specification and functionality of the Precision Clock Synchronization Protocol for Networked Measurement and Control Systems (PTP) 2002 and 2008.
 
Through PTP, multiple devices are automatically synchronized with the most accurate clock found on the network. During operation and after initial synchronization, the PTP real-time clocks are constantly adjusted by exchanging timing messages. The RTS implementation uses statistical techniques to further reduce residual fluctuations.
 
Because the RTS IEEE 1588 protocol stack supports the PTP hot-pluggable functionality requirement, devices may join or leave the network at any time.
 
The software is simple, provides a graphical user interface, is administration free and requires minimal resources regarding host components or networks.
 
The RTS IEEE 1588 stack includes all servo algorithms, regulators, filters, PTP-Clock based on hardware timer and direct Timer access.
 
The simple Windows install package and GUI makes using the Real-Time Systems solution easy even for administrators without any special knowledge about the operating system or programming skills.
 
The Intel 82574L and 82579LM is an Intel Gigabit Network chip with IEEE 1588 support, also available on many inexpensive PCI and PCI Express network cards. Important to most customers is the fact that this chip is found on the Intel Embedded Roadmap with a long term availability of minimum seven years guaranteed.
 
NOTE:
The Real-Time Systems PTP solution can also be purchased for a variety of other platforms like ARM and PPC for many operating systems including VxWorks, QNX Neutrino, Linux or ThreadX etc.
