Join us as we relive a portion of the Scituate MA. Irish Sea Mossing Industry from 1960 to 1997. This is an industry that existed for almost 140 years in this small Atlantic Coast Town between Boston and Cape Cod. Recognizing the sea plant, Carrageenin, that they used in Ireland to thicken their Blanc Mange pudding, the Irish Immigrants soon developed an entire industry of harvesting, curing and marketing the Sea Moss. Used as a food binder, the finished product was sold to various food companies to add to their products that required binders. Some examples are chocolate milk and ice cream. Moss is also used in the "fining" process of beer making.
